The American Alliance of Museums
The American Alliance of Museums develops standards and best practices, gathers and shares knowledge, and provides advocacy on issues of concern to the museum community. Representing more than 35,000 individual museum professionals and volunteers, institutions, and corporate partners serving the museum field, the Alliance stands for the broad scope of the museum community.
Each year the American Alliance of Museums holds their Annual Meeting & MuseumExpo, the largest gathering of museum professionals in the world. For the organization’s Phoenix, Arizona-based event, Pretty Picture Club was tasked with creating an illustrated map of the Phoenix Metropolitan area, with the primary goal of exposing out-of-state visitors to the rich diversity of museums in the city.

defining the visual language
In working with the leadership at the Phoenix chapter of the AAM, our first task was to establish a style and color palette for the map. After narrowing to three potential palettes, we arrived at one that was eye-catching and drew inspiration from classically-southwestern colors.
In total, we were provided with 60 points of interest to be featured on the map, 24 of which were to be paired with spot illustrations. Due to the high density of museums in Downtown Phoenix (and the convention center where the AAM event was to take place), part of the map also needed to be a blown-up version of a relatively small part of the city.
We designed our minimalist spot illustration style to look good at small sizes. Utilizing it along with some creative map marker placement, we assembled our visualization of the museums of Phoenix. Given the complexity of the project and a tight timeline, the resulting map we created was a big hit with the AAM and museum community.
